Parliament on lockdown after man arrested by armed police outside building

Parliament was reportedly put on lockdown earlier after armed police arrested a man outside the gates.

Reports suggest that the man was tasered as police shouted 'knife, knife, knife'. There was a large police presence, and barriers have been erected to keep the public away from the site of his arrest.

The incident ended swiftly, according to the BBC's John Pienaar, as the man was taken away in a police van. This incident is not believed by police to be terror related.

The suspect was seen being held just yards from where PC Keith Palmer was stabbed to death by terrorist Khalid Masood in March.

Police have now released a statement saying:

“At 11.10am on Friday a man was detained near to the Palace of Westminster. The man – aged in his 30s – was arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife. There are no reports of any injuries.”
