Why the Liberal Democrats Can Still be Trusted

The Liberal Democrats are currently at a significant low point in popularity up and down the country but is it really fair to the Lib Dems?

It is often said that Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats simply cannot be trusted but that is not the case. In 2010, the Liberal Democrats had 4 key policies on the front page of their General Election Manifesto: fairer taxes that put money back in your pocket, a fair chance for every child, a fair future creating jobs by making Britain greener and a fair deal by cleaning up politics.

THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS HAVE DELIVERED ALL OF THESE AND MORE.

Fairer taxes that put money back in your pocketThe Liberal Democrats have given a £700 tax cut to 24 million people, which is increasing to £800 in 2015. In 2010, Conservative leader David Cameron said this was impossible. Clearly, it was possible.

A fair chance for every child: The Liberal Democrats have given 15 hours free early education to all 3-4 year-olds and 40% of 2 year-olds as well as giving free school meals to Infant School children. The Liberal Democrats have also set a £2.5 billion Pupil Premium, which puts money in schools, targeted at pupils who need the most help. AND, the Liberal Democrats have created a record number of apprentices, with 1.6 million people starting an apprenticeship since 2010.

A fair future creating jobs by making Britain greener: The Liberal Democrats have created 200,000 new green jobs by investing in renewable energy and have already managed to double the amount of electricity generated from offshore wind.

A fair deal by cleaning up politicsThe Liberal Democrats have stopped Prime Ministers changing the date of general elections to suit them by introducing Fixed Term Parliaments and have given more powers to devolved institutions and local councils through the Localism Act. The Liberal Democrats are also dedicated to reforming the House of Lords – something which the other two main parties say they agree on – but the conservatives refused to back such reform.

But what about Tuition Fees? I hear you cry… Yes, the Liberal Democrats failed to abolish Tuition Fees but they did get a fairer deal for students than the previous system and, most importantly, Nick Clegg publically apologised.
