James Comey has had, shall we say, a wild ride.
After intervinening several times in last year's US election to release information on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, and giving an unorthadox press conference in which he opined on her ethical irrisponsibiliy, FBI director Comey was probably instrumental in Trump's victory.
Clinton, along with several respected pollsters, cite Comey's shock rushed letter to congress about a re-opened portion of the investigation a week before polling day as being the turning point in the Presidential race.
Trump repeatedly praised Comey's actions and behaviour during and in the immediate aftermath of the campaign.
It has since transpired that the FBI was also aware of and investigating links between Trump's team and the Russian government. The former FBI director did not make these investigations public during the campaign.
As the investigation has started to build momentum, Trump has now sacked the FBI head citing his mismanagement of the Clinton investigation- specifically the bizarre press conference he held when it emerged that the investigation was being dropped.
Naturally this has provoked widespread suspicion that the President is trying to suppress the investigation.
